Many long-haul flights into London land at Heathrow, so for many international students the first sight of England is a terminal on the far side of the capital, a long way from Canterbury. A University of Kent to Heathrow taxi, booked before you leave home, turns the last leg into one car ride with your luggage in the boot instead of a chain of trains across London.
This guide is written for new students and the parents booking for them, and it works in reverse for the flight home at the end of term. It also covers staff and residents of Blean, Rough Common and Tyler Hill heading out on long-haul trips.
Heathrow to the University of Kent: the drive
The typical time Express Travel Kent publishes for Heathrow to Canterbury is 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes, and the campus sits on the city's northern edge. The car follows the M25 round the south of London, then the M2 and the A2 into Canterbury, and climbs to the campus by St Stephen's Hill or University Road.
After a night flight, many passengers sleep for some of it. If you would like a stop for a drink or the toilets on the way, mention it when you book so it is part of the booking; stops added on the day can be charged.
From the gate to the car
After landing you go through passport control, collect your bags from the reclaim belt and walk through customs into the arrivals hall. That is where your driver waits, holding a board with your name, and from there they help with the trolley.
Heathrow does not allow pick-ups in its terminal drop-off areas, so private hire drivers collect from the Terminal Parking car parks: expect a short walk to the car. The airport uses Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and your ticket tells you which one, so put it in your booking.
Immigration queues vary in length. Your flight is tracked and the collection timed to the real landing, and after an international flight you have 45 minutes of free waiting counted from when the plane actually lands. Waiting beyond that can be added to the fare.
Timing your flight with Arrivals Weekend
The university asks new students to arrive on Arrivals Weekend: 26 and 27 September in 2026, and 9 and 10 January in 2027 for January starters. Before flying, complete the accommodation e-induction, book an arrival slot and download your Arrivals Pass, then aim your flight and your car so that you reach the campus within the slot.
Keys or fobs are collected at your accommodation reception. If you land late and reception has closed by the time you arrive, the university's arrivals guide says to contact Campus Security; they hand over your keys against the Pass and you complete check-in the next day.
January starters should know that the campus meal plan begins on 9 January 2027, and that before then only limited catering and the Co-op shop are open. Buying something to eat at the airport before the drive is a good idea.
- Bring your ID, your Arrivals Pass, your visa documents and your academic certificates and transcripts.
- Collect your KentOne ID card from the Arrivals Hub in the Templeman Library once you have slept.
- Online enrolment for 2026/27 has a registration deadline of Monday 19 October 2026.
A year's luggage and the car to carry it
Two large suitcases and a rucksack fit a saloon, which takes up to 4 passengers with 2 large cases. Travelling with a parent, or with three big cases, choose an estate (3 to 4 large cases) or an MPV (up to 6 passengers, 4 or more cases).
Pack for stairs as well as airline limits: the university warns that some rooms are several flights up. Its moving-in page also lists items not allowed in halls, including candles, mini-fridges, cube adaptors and pets, and points to a service that delivers bedding and kitchen essentials to your room if ordered before its deadline, which saves suitcase space.
Booking and paying from abroad
Book online, where the fixed fare for your college or court appears before you pay, or by WhatsApp on +44 7783 973058 or email if you have questions first. Online payment accepts cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and Revolut, and the code ExpressTravelKent gives 10% off.
Put in the flight number, the terminal, the name of the passenger, how many large cases there are, and the accommodation you have been given. If your UK phone number is not working yet, add a parent's number or your email, and message us on WhatsApp over Wi-Fi once you land.
Flying home from Heathrow at the end of term
The autumn term ends on 11 December 2026 and the university closes from 23 December to 3 January; the spring term finishes on 19 March 2027 and the summer term on 18 June. Many students fly home around those dates, so book the car when you book the flight.
Work back from your airline's check-in deadline, allow the upper end of the drive, 2 hours 30 minutes, and add a margin. The fixed fare does not change for traffic, roadworks, diversions or the hour you leave; cancelling more than 24 hours ahead costs nothing.
