Stansted, Luton and London City from the University of Kent and Blean

Heathrow and Gatwick are not the only options. Cheap European fares often leave from Stansted or Luton, and London City suits a short business hop. All three lie across the Thames or in east London, which makes the route from the University of Kent a little different: a river crossing, a toll, and in Luton's case a drive as long as the one to Heathrow.

Below, each one in turn: the University of Kent to Stansted taxi run, Luton, and London City, with the typical times Express Travel Kent publishes for Canterbury, the city at the foot of the campus hill.

University of Kent to Stansted: route and timing

Typical time: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. From the campus the car heads through Canterbury to the A2 and the M2, crosses the Thames at Dartford and runs up the M11 to the airport.

Stansted's drop-off area right outside the terminal is called Express Set Down, a barrierless zone where you step out with your bags. For collections the airport points drivers to its Short Stay car parks, or the Mid Stay car park, which is linked to the terminal by a free shuttle bus. Either way the driver meets you in arrivals with a name board.

Luton: as far as Heathrow

Typical time: 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes, the same as Heathrow. The route crosses at Dartford and follows the M25 round to the north-west of London.

Luton's Drop Off and Pick Up Zone is about a five-minute walk from the terminal and has a maximum stay of 30 minutes, with vehicles never to be left unattended there. The driver comes into the terminal to meet you and walks you out to the car.

If your Luton flight leaves early, work back from the airline's bag-drop deadline, allow 2 hours 30 minutes for the drive and add a margin; a dawn flight usually means leaving the campus in the middle of the night.

London City: the Docklands option

Typical time: 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. The usual way in is the A2 towards London and the Blackwall Tunnel under the Thames to the Royal Docks.

London City is compact, which suits visiting academics and staff on short European trips with hand luggage. Its drop-off area in front of the terminal allows a stay of up to 10 minutes, and pre-booked cars collect arriving passengers from the pick-up area in the Short Stay car park. The airport also has its own DLR station.

Choosing between them if your ticket allows

Often the airline decides for you. When it does not, compare the whole trip rather than the fare alone: the drive from Canterbury, the time from the kerb to the gate, and the hour you would need to leave the campus.

On the published Canterbury times, London City is the shortest drive of the three, Stansted sits in the middle, and Luton is the longest. A cheaper flight from Luton at 6am can mean leaving the hill around 2am; a slightly dearer one from London City at 9am lets you sleep in your own bed until after five. For staff with meetings at the other end, that difference often matters more than the ticket price.

Crossings that charge, and what that means for the fare

The Dartford Crossing charge, Dart Charge, usually applies to crossings between 6am and 10pm, weekends and bank holidays included. The Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels have charged since 7 April 2025, between 06:00 and 22:00 every day.

Tolls on the journey, where they apply, can be added to the fixed fare, as can car parking fees, waiting beyond the free time, unbooked stops and big route changes asked for on the way. What never moves the fare: traffic, roadworks, diversions, early mornings, late nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Leaving campus in the small hours

An early flight from any of these airports means a pickup well before dawn, so a few habits help. Book the court or college exactly, with the Park Wood court postcode if that is where you live. Have the bags downstairs at the agreed time: free waiting at your address is 10 minutes.

In Blean, Rough Common or Tyler Hill, give the house number and, if it is hard to find in the dark, a landmark: the shops by the zebra crossing on the A290 in Blean, Hackington Road in Tyler Hill, or Rough Common Road.

  • Check the airport on your ticket twice: Stansted and Luton are a long way apart.
  • Give the flight number for the return leg so the collection is timed to the landing.
  • Share the car with friends on the same flight: the fare is for the vehicle, not per seat.

Coming back to the hill

On the way home the driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and helps with the luggage. Free waiting is 45 minutes after an international landing and 30 after a domestic one, counted from when you land.

Back on campus the car takes you to your accommodation. If you are returning at the start of term, check the university's arrival dates first: the January 2027 Arrivals Weekend is on 9 and 10 January.
